Kandahar city in Kandahar province is in the south of Afghanistan. It was Afghanistan’s original capital. Kandahar is one of the most culturally significant cities of the Pashtuns and has been their traditional seat of power for more than 300 years. The city played a central role in the Taliban movement (1996–2001). Muslims account for 99% of the population of Afghanistan, with between 80% and 89% practicing Sunni Islam while 10-19% are Shia. There are zero public Christian churches in Afghanistan.
