In Afghanistan, the livestock sector is an important pillar of the food system, as well as the economic sector. When livestock suffer, people suffer. There are 34 million small ruminants and 5 .8 million cattle in Afghanistan. Although the Kuchi constitute only 11 % of the Afghan population they own about 60 % of the small ruminants. Kuchi family groups migrate from the highlands of central Afghanistan in summer to the lowland pastures in winter. In the last twenty years, however, due to serious droughts and continuous wars, many Kuchi lost their herds, and took on a marginal sedentary lifestyle.
We made this film for the Dutch Committee of Afghanistan (DCA), covering their CLAP/KUCHI program which supports Kuchi communities and their livestock.
